StopWatt complaints and reviews: BBB, Trustpilot, scam?

Not all reviews carry the same weight. Here is how to tell seller marketing from independent feedback, and what to verify yourself.

By the Buyer Notebook editorial desk. Reviewed . Desk research, not a hands-on or laboratory test.

Seller testimonials versus independent feedback

Quotes, photos and star graphics that appear on a seller's own page are chosen and published by the seller. They may be genuine, staged or illustrative, and you usually cannot tell which. Treat them as advertising, not as evidence.

Independent platforms let buyers submit their own experiences. They are more useful, but they have limits too: anyone can post, unhappy and delighted buyers are both more likely to write, and a single profile can collect reviews for several resellers using the same product name.

What the BBB and Trustpilot profiles show

The Better Business Bureau profile lists StopWatt under Energy Conservation Products in Dublin, Ohio, and includes customer complaints. The Trustpilot page for stopwatt.com collects open reviews. On both, feedback at the time we checked was predominantly negative.

Trustpilot snapshot, checked October 7, 2026

The stopwatt.com profile showed a TrustScore of 1.4 out of 5 from 78 reviews, with 94% one-star and 4% five-star. This is the platform's own profile figure at that date, not a Buyer Notebook rating or a product test, and it does not include the separate stopwatts.com profile. Reviewers most often described not seeing the savings they expected, unwanted additions at checkout and difficulty getting refunds. A smaller number reported positive experiences.

Complaints are allegations from customers. They are not adjudicated findings, and the business may have responded or resolved them. Read the details and any company replies on the profiles themselves rather than relying on a summary. We do not reproduce individual reviews here.

Match the seller. These profiles may relate to a different company or distributor than the one behind the checkout you reach. Compare the business name, website domain and contact details on your order page with the profile before drawing conclusions.

Is StopWatt a scam, or is it legitimate?

People often search those words when they mean several different questions. It helps to separate them:

  • Is it a real product that ships? It is a physical device sold by identifiable online sellers, and complaint profiles discuss real orders.
  • Does it deliver the advertised savings? We found no independent StopWatt-specific evidence for the dramatic savings claims, and the seller's own small print says those claims have not been substantiated. See our evidence guide.
  • Is the marketing fair? The presentation relies on story-style advertising and bill imagery we could not verify. That is a reason for caution.

We are not making any finding of fraud or criminal conduct. Those are legal conclusions for regulators and courts. Our view is narrower: the savings case is unproven, so buy only if you accept that risk.

Has Consumer Reports reviewed StopWatt?

In this research we did not locate an attributable Consumer Reports test or review of StopWatt. Nothing on this site suggests that Consumer Reports has endorsed, rated or reviewed this product. If you see such a claim elsewhere, look for it on Consumer Reports' own website.

Buyer due diligence checklist

  1. Write down the exact seller name and website domain shown at checkout.
  2. Search that exact name on the BBB and Trustpilot, not just the product name.
  3. Read the written return policy: window, who pays return shipping, restocking fees and whether opened items qualify.
  4. Check whether the order includes add-ons or subscriptions you did not intend.
  5. Pay with a method that offers dispute protection, such as a credit card.
  6. Save screenshots of the offer, your receipt and any emails.
  7. Record your kWh use before installing so you can judge results yourself.
